This Sunday we hear one of the most famous gospel accounts, the “Emmaus Story”. This famous account has often been seen as an icon of the early Christian Community, reflecting on itself as a post resurrection community of faith in the Risen Lord. Like the disciples, we too need to walk with the Lord, to have his spirit present among us and to explain how the events of life’s tragedies, such as Christ’s sufferings can still be signs of God’s love and providence. Like the disciples, we too, long for the Lord to “stay with us” as often as we feel that darkness is coming and we are afraid to be alone. Yet, if we remain faithful to his command to “Do this in memory of me” each time we come to Mass and break bread together, we are strengthened, nourished and sustained, in order to continue on life’s pilgrim
journey home to the Father.
